Sgt. Daniel Mata grew up in Houston, Texas, and joined the United States Marine Corps on September 11, 2000. He was stationed in Camp Pendleton California with India Company 3rd Battalion 5th Marine Infantry Regiment.

He deployed to Iraq in early 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and would deploy another two times before leaving the Marines in 2008. Sgt. Mata was an outstanding Marine.

Sgt. Mata passed away in Oregon on December 2, 2023, leaving behind his wife and 3 children.
