Wiliam ADKINS Obituary: Largo, Florida mourns the loss of a remarkable individual, William Penn Jr. “Bill” Adkins, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at the age of 88. Born in Stephens, Georgia, on December 10, 1935, to William and Evelyn Harrison Adkins, Bill’s journey through life was marked by resilience, dedication, and a profound commitment to both family and profession.
In 1938, the Adkins family embarked on a new chapter, relocating to Auburn, Alabama, where Bill spent his formative years. Tragically, Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joan Adkins Hammond. However, his memory lives on through his surviving loved ones, including his devoted wife of 66 years, Natalie Mazza Adkins, and their cherished children: William S. Adkins (Ann), Laura G. Adkins, and Kevin B. Adkins (Julie).

Bill’s academic journey saw him graduate from Auburn High School in 1953, followed by earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Auburn University in 1957. His academic excellence led to induction into Tau Beta Pi, the National Engineering Honor Society. Following graduation and completion of his ROTC program, Bill was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force, serving from 1958 to 1960.
A substantial portion of Bill’s professional career unfolded at Honeywell-Military Avionics in Clearwater, Florida, where he dedicated an astounding 49 years of service. His impact on military technology was profound, earning him a US Patent in 2003 for his innovative work on the Tomahawk Missile. This design significantly enhanced the missile’s accuracy and effectiveness, marking a pivotal moment in military engineering.
Beyond his technical accomplishments, Bill was an integral part of the Honeywell Minnreg Association, assuming roles such as chairman, treasurer, and contributing to the Gourmet Club and Retirees Club. His love for sports was evident through decades of participation in the Honeywell Corporate Softball Team, achieving victory in the Florida State Industrial League championship in 1967 and 1992.
Bill was not only a distinguished engineer but also an active member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for an impressive 49 years. His commitment to the profession extended beyond personal achievement, as he served as his region’s membership director. Bill was passionate about nurturing the next generation of engineers, dedicating substantial time to mentor students and young professionals.
A celebration of Bill’s life and a memorial service will be held on Monday, March 11, 2024, at 11 am at Serenity Gardens, 13401 Indian Rocks Rd., Largo, with a visitation at 10 am.
