Don Swindell Obituary: Musician and Imaging Director, Don Swindell of Detroit, Michigan has sadly passed away on Monday 11th December 2023.
Don Swindell went on to have a notable career in Major/Large Market Radio, where he worked for nearly 30 years after graduating from Indiana University Bloomington. He was the Executive Morning Show Producer and Director of Creative Services at WDFN from 1994 to 2002.
After that, he was the Imaging Director at CBS Radio for seven years (2008–2015) and Assistant Program Director/Creative Director at CBS Radio Detroit for five years (2002–2007). At CBS Radio, he helped create and provide voiceovers for a wide range of station collateral, including presentations, promotions, and advertisements for local businesses.
He was also in charge of all in-game imaging for the Detroit Tigers, Red Wings, and Lions, three of the city’s most famous sports teams. He has a long history in radio, having hosted Morning Drive shows for 12 years at stations like WJZZ-Detroit, 98 Rock-Tampa, and WLS-FM Chicago. In addition to being a featured radio talent twice a week, he was the Production Director at WLS-FM.
After that, he devoted the next 21 years to sports radio in Detroit, first at WDFN in 1994 and then for 13 years at CBS Radio, Detroit. He made an unforgettable impression on the business throughout his career, which included Imaging, Commercial Production, and Management (including four years as Assistant Program Director). His work as the voice of CBS Sports Radio Detroit is notable and will likely be heard for some time to come.
The Detroit Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons were among the major sports clubs that entrusted him with the production of in-game imaging in addition to his radio efforts. Along with his work with KRLD-FM in Dallas, he also produced in-game graphics for the Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys for two years.
